Chapter Six

A Heart's Worth

Dorian woke to a painful squeeze of his heart. The damn muscle was just that, flesh and blood, but most magicals held the source of their power within the spiritual heart, mind, and… core. The beacon of Kate’s heart was so full she faintly glowed in his arms. She was so beautiful. So full and satisfied, she only sighed with a curl of her lips as he escaped from her warmth. He didn’t want to wake her with his wheezing gasps.

Grabbing up his clothes, he left, loathingly grateful his nature kept him stealthy. Pre-dawn dove grey kissed the horizon and low mage-lights pulsed and swirled at his feet. Stumbling through her suite and into the hall, his rooms were right across from hers. Well… that was… convenient? Damn and blast! Fuck. Everything was royally cocked-up!

With a careful snap of his fingers, his bags were packed, but he still hadn’t dressed. The very notion of clothes grated his sensibilities—the scratchy and confining things. His tail lashed and he blinked to realize he was still very much in demon form. He snarled at his reflection in the mirror.

Once he’d hated this form. Once he’d thought he would have no need for his heart—an easy thing to bargain away. Stupid. Contracts were binding in blood.

He felt Alfred come in behind him on silent and cautious feet. Perhaps Alfred had caught a bit of the passionate frenzy too? Dorian growled a low warning not to come closer though they’d seen each other in worse conditions. Dorian was all too aware of how exposed he was in more ways than one.

“I thought I had more time,” he said, gritting his teeth. He attempted to wrestle his demonic appearance back into such a mundane body, but once unfettered it was hard to go back for a bit. “I’m sorry to pull you away, old friend.”

“We catch our pleasures as they come, Master Grey.”

Dorian grunted. “Back to Master Grey, eh? Well, it couldn’t last. This was just supposed to be a respite. Perhaps you should stay?” he suggested, wincing at the twist in his gut. He’d have to leave soon.

“Don’t be daft, Dorian.” Alfred snorted. “I’m not going to leave you.”

“The way I’ll be traveling, you can’t join me.” He chanced a glance, leering at the big fey. Alfred was all out of sorts—shirt untucked, shoes in hand, jacket undone from last night. There was a smudge of lipstick on his neck and he smelled of sex. Dorian let a slightly crazed grin expose his sharp teeth. “Enjoy your lady and follow at your leisure, Alfred. Make sure to take care of Lucy and the little ferret belongs to Ka—Lady Astraea. It’s the least I can give you for putting up with me.”

“Dorian! This has gone on too—”

He didn’t let Alfred finish, but accepted the summoning circle around him. It flared in a sickly orange. He was going to catch hell, but closing his eyes to the yank through the aether, all he saw was Kate.
